三年前的一場紐約蘇富比拍賣，一件Camille Corot的作品《Civita Castellana》由來自洛杉磯曼哈頓海灘，擁有龐大收藏的Sweeney家族得標，然而當時對此作品同樣深感興趣的蓋提美術館策展人 Scott Schaefer雖與Corot失之交臂，但Sweeney家族卻讓Schaefer留下難以抹滅的印象！就在Schaefer得以與今年5月展出這件錯失的藏品前，Civita Castellana將懸掛在洛杉磯一座全然超越傳統規範的實驗性美術館ESMOA（El Segundo Museum of Art）！（Los Angeles Times 02, 2013）

超越傳統規範的實驗性美術館ESMOA

位於El Segundo、2000平方米且三層樓的挑高的ESMOA，由Sweeney家族一手打造，並由此家族的基金會ARTLAB21所管理，收藏領域涵蓋Pablo Picasso、Anselm Kiefer、Andreas Gursky、Gustave Courbet、Peter Doig等現在以及當代藝術作品。雖說Sweeney家族是以收藏起家，且當初置入此塊土地只為替藏品尋找儲存空間，但在前市長Eric Busch鼓舞以及Sweeney家族對藝術推廣的雄心壯志下，他們便將美術館的定位設在實驗性的laboratory上，他們將展覽以及空間本身作為鄰近學校的藝術資源，並在館內邀請藝術家駐館創作，每檔展覽以高度彈性以及「沒有規則的規則」廣納不同時代、種族、環境、社會、媒材但本身創作語彙卻能串古連今的作品，ESMOA賦予觀眾不僅是挑戰性的觀看視野，更替其在美術館史上豎立開創性地位。

而來自台灣的也趣藝廊藝術家「羅展鵬」的作品就在ESMOA這樣革命性的氛圍下，讓Sweeney家族眼睛為之一亮，並受邀在此檔「EXPERIENCE03:TRUTH」與西方藝術大師共同展出！洛杉磯是個集金錢、暴力、慾望、享樂、權力於一身的魅惑之地，而此檔展覽恰恰自這氛圍中發芽，試圖從男性以及女性的兩造角度出發，在互相揣摩、觀看，產生衝突、不解、融合之中，讓整場展覽產生致命性的衝撞火花！對ESMOA這檔獨特的EXPERIENCE來說，羅展鵬身為唯一受邀參展的亞洲藝術家，其作品的角色定位最為令人好奇，據Sweeney家族解釋，羅展鵬作品將繪畫的本質發揮到極致，透過極端的照相寫實，帶出台灣這個被異文化以及強權擠壓下的矛盾社會，以及此特殊的年輕世代在這般壓迫下那充斥無奈以及壓抑的真實情緒。在他白面者系列作品中，那彷彿化身蒼白的吸血鬼皮相下的女性們，時而放棄、尖叫、時而抑鬱、掙扎，而究竟透過這樣的闡述傳達給西方世界有觀於台灣社會的「真相」究竟有幾分真實性，而其背後的真相又是如何被接納，恐怕是讓Sweeney家族為之驚艷到並將之涵擴在此展中的主要原因！。ESMOA以開創性的角度去架構這特殊的經驗，不分藝術家的年齡、國家、性別、種族、作品時代性，全然以說故事的方式，從作品最原始的本質出發，一場成功地實驗性體驗就在美術館場域中發生，而來自地球另一端的台灣藝術家羅展鵬將從這場ESMOA的EXPERIENCE中開創與經典藝術大師對話的可能性並震撼整個洛杉磯！

March 6, 2013 (El Segundo, California) – Though it may be one of the core values of Western society, truth seems awfully hard to find these days. Not on the Pacific coast of southern California, however. Nearly 500 years of artistic contemplation on veracity will be on display with TRUTH, a new art experience at ESMoA in El Segundo, California, opening at 10:00am on May 12, 2013.

The TRUTH experience features a diverse combination of classic, modern and contemporary artworks selected from the Sweeney Collection, whose owners are among the founders of ESMoA. Works of oil, acrylic, watercolor, porcelain, wood, paper, metal and canvas by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Diego Rivera, Ghada Amer, Stefan Balkenhol, Albrecht Dürer, Thomas Eller, George Grosz, Horst Janssen, Fernand Khnopff, Martin Kippenberger, Gustav Klimt, Robert Lucander, Robert Mapplethorpe, Eadweard Muybridge, Alphonse Mucha, Philipp Pearlstein, Max Pechstein, Lo Chan Peng, Pablo Picasso, Deborah Poynton, Christian Schöler, Carolein Smit, Franz von Stuck, and Jasper van der Laanen.

The works will be laid out in provocative style within ESMoA’s main exhibition space, with bright red vinyl flooring and a pathway leading visitors on a serpentine walk through white lace curtains for unexpected viewing angles on individual artworks. The design plays on the ambivalence of red carpet entrances and the cautiousness with which American institutions tend to treat naked flesh. It will certainly make the more aged works – such as Expulsion From Paradise, a 500-year-old portrayal of Adam & Eve discovering their nakedness by an unknown Westphalian Master – as fresh and sensational as they must have looked to their contemporaries. It’s the same with more recent works, such as das Glück liegt hinter der Hecke (“luck lies behind the hedge”) by Finnish contemporary artist Robert Lucander.

Doubtless, the TRUTH art experience will inspire myriad questions in the minds of viewers. Where do you get truth? Where do you see it? Do you desire to see it in yourself, or are you afraid of seeing your counterfeit in the mirror? Is it easier to see truth in other people? Do you recognize the beauty of truth? Does that beauty lie in the eyes of the beholder? And do lies have short legs?

ESMoA invites everyone to contemplate all of the above and more with TRUTH, starting at 10:00am on Sunday, May 12 in El Segundo, California.
